Summary:

As a full-time, non-exempt status employee of the City of Hanahan, the Fire Inspector serves as a member of the administrative staff to the Fire Chief and his/ her command staff. This position requires an individual to perform the work outlined below in the highest legal, moral and ethical standards of this department and the City of Hanahan. The position serves as the Fire Marshal for the City of Hanahan and as such directs community risk reduction measures, fire investigations and code compliance inspections within the city or elsewhere at the direction of the Fire Chief.

The Fire Marshal is the principal official responsible for compliance with state and local codes governing life safety in buildings within the City of Hanahan. The Fire Marshal also works as the department’s Community Risk Reduction Officer and is expected to interface with staff, citizens, and visitors to promote the mission for a fire safe community.

The essential functions are listed below,  management may assign additional functions as necessary:

  • Learns, interprets and enforces pertinent fire and life safety codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Conducts fire code inspections on all commercial buildings for fire hazards, efficiency of fire protection equipment, adequacy of fire escapes and fire exits, and general compliance with fire prevention laws.
  • Assists with pre-incident surveys of all commercial structures within the City.
  • Tours construction projects and meets with event planners/managers and consultants regarding fire and life safety hazards.
  • Advises and instructs occupants and owners regarding regulations pertaining to fire hazards and dangers of fire.
  • Follows up to resolution on cases with re-inspections that could involve fines or large financial impact to the business owner. Maintains fire code inspection database in computer.
  • Investigates commercial and residential fires by assisting in collecting evidence, taking photos and/or sketches of the scene, documenting personal observations, and obtaining witness statements.
  • Prepares and files reports of inspections, investigations and other work performed, including Quarterly Report to Fire Marshal’s Office.
  • Attends training, conferences, seminars, meetings, to enhance job knowledge and skills to maintain required certifications.
  • Conducts home inspections for fire safety, and smoke alarm installation at the request of residents.
  • Receives and responds to public inquiries, complaints, and requests for assistance regarding life safety matters.
  • Teaches and advocates fire and life safety to groups, churches, clubs, and HOA's.
  • Oversees the Department Mobile Data Terminals and Related Equipment.
  • Oversees the City Automatic External Defibrillators Program.
  • Oversees the Department's Hazardous Communication Program.
  • Receives and reviews a variety of reports and documents including fire inspection reports, architectural blueprints, construction plans, certificates of completion. 
  • Participates in the department of public education and public relations efforts.
  • Program coordinator for Child Safety Seat inspection and installation.
  • Prepares and or processes a variety of documents, including fire inspection records and reports, inspection letters, court summonses, daily reports, memos, correspondence.
  • Operates a department vehicle and a wide variety of office equipment including a computer, scanner, printer, copier, telephone, camera, measuring device, two-way radio, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Fire Chief, other department supervisors, other city employees, business/property owners, tenants, contractors, architects, engineers, attorneys, and the public.
  • Upon identification of life safety hazards, immediately notifies all personnel of hazards found that could result in injury or death.
  • Maintains the South Carolina Fire Safe Community designation for the City of Hanahan.
  • Conducts fire code inspections on all commercial buildings for fire hazards, efficiency of fire protection equipment, adequacy of fire escapes and fire exits, and general compliance with fire prevention laws.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in fire service or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Must complete required coursework and maintain Interior Structural Firefighter and other certifications as issued by the S.C. Fire Academy and obtain IFSAC Firefighter II (FFII) certification. 

  • Possess a valid state driver’s license  
  • Possess CPR and First Aid certification  
  • Possess and maintain EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification
  • Five (5) years of related fire service experience, which includes three (1) years of fire inspection experience
  • Fire Life Safety Educator
  • Possession of valid South Carolina Class E driver’s license within 6 months of hire / assuming position
  • Successful completion of South Carolina Fire Academy EVDT course (Emergency Vehicle Driver’s Training) within 6 months of hire / assuming position.
  • Possession of NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800, 300, and 400 within 6 months of hire / assuming position.
  • South Carolina Resident Fire Marshal’s certification
  • International Association of Arson Investigators - Fire Investigation Technician
  • International Fire Service Accreditation Congress - Fire and Life Safety Educator

Starting salary range: $44,698.00 to $60,043.33 DOQ & DOE.
