Mayor's Column for the Hanahan, Goose Creek and North Charleston News Mayor Minnie N. Blackwell, City of Hanahan September 10, 2008
My report for August, 2008 will focus on a variety of projects and activities that affect the citizens of Hanahan. Sometimes, we take for granted that you are aware of local public services, activities and projects and, unfortunately, that isn't always correct. So, please note the following:
1. Several local business owners requested that City Council approve their request to schedule a public referendum for the Sunday sale of liquor on the November 4, 2008 ballot. The following question will be asked of Hanahan voters: "Shall the South Carolina Department of Revenue be authorized to issue temporary permits in the City of Hanahan, South Carolina, for periods not to exceed twenty-four hours to allow the possession, sale, and consumption of alcoholic liquors by the drink to bona fide nonprofit organizations and business establishments authorized to be licensed for consumption-on-site premises sales to allow the sale of beer and wine at permitted off-premises locations without regard to the days or hours of sales?" I, along with the City Council, encourage you to exercise your right to vote on this issue.
2. Berkeley County has indicated that they will also offer voters the opportunity to vote on an increase in the sales tax of a penny that would allow the County to address the many transportation needs of our citizens. The County has suggested that some of the proceeds would be used to help fund the Railroad Avenue Extension and Murray Drive/Highland Park Intersection projects. Both these projects are high priorities for the City and absolutely essential for traffic circulation and safety. So, we encourage voters to seriously consider a positive vote on this issue.
3. Berkeley County and the City of Hanahan also have formed a partnership to offer additional solid waste services to our citizens. Beginning in September, a container for the disposal of residential building materials will be available to our residents. This container will be available from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm on the third Saturday of each month. The location will alternate between (a) on Murray Drive across the street from Hanahan Middle School (September location) and (b) in Otranto across from Fire Station #2 (October location). Further information and restrictions will be placed on residents waste containers within the next few days. Information also can be obtained from the Public Works Department at 529-3413.
4. Our new Recreation Department Gymnasium was dedicated on September 3, 2008. This facility is now ready for use by Hanahan residents. We are extremely proud of this project and encourage you to use it on a regular basis. Contact the Recreation Department for more information at 266-0723.
5. The Tanner Ford Boulevard Intersection project continues at a slow pace. We understand the frustrations of residents with early morning traffic flow; however, the light and turn lanes should be completed within the next few weeks if weather allows construction activities to continue on a normal pace.
6. Some dates to remember: (a) City Council Workshop on October 13, 2008 (7:00 pm) at Fire Station #3 in Tanner Plantation, (b) Turkey Creek Bridge Festival on November 8, 2008 at the City Park (more details to come), (c) Christmas Tree Lighting on December 5, 2008 at City Hall and, (d) the Christmas Parade on December 6, 2008.
Finally, City Council recognized the family of Jennifer Flowers for the "Community of Character" traits of "Perseverance", "Honesty" and "Courage". Councilman Tim Baker and Jennifer's 4th Grade teacher, Patsy Jones, offered moving tributes to the memory of this special young lady. Jennifer was an excellent role model for all our citizens and we cherish her many contributions to our community. May God bless her family, friends and teachers!
I, along with the Hanahan City Council, thank you for your support of our public service efforts!
