Demographics

With a population of 20,325, Hanahan is a growing city. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, there were 20,325 people, 7,866 households, and 5,495 families residing in the city. The population density was approximately 1,499.6 people per square mile (578.9/km²). There were 9,599 housing units at an average density of 707.7 per square mile (273.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 64.6% White (non-Hispanic), 11.8% African American (non-Hispanic), 0.2% Native American, 4.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.9% from two or more races, and 13.1% Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 7,866 households, of which 33.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.38% were married couples living together, 10.81% had a female householder with no husband present, 30.14% were non-families, and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67, and the average family size was 3.15.

In the city, the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.46% from 25 to 44, 23.77% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36.5 years.
According to the census, for every 100 females, there were approximately 103.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $84,061, and the median income for a family was $100,226. Males had a median income of approximately $64,527, compared to $47,457 for females. The per capita income for the city was $ 39,558. About 10.9% of the population, including 21.0% of those under age 18 and 9.7% of those age 65 or over.
