Compensation:

Starting salary for uncertified applicants is $48,007.44. Starting salary for certified police officers is $48,007.44 to $56,635.00.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED.
  • Must have no criminal convictions.
  • Must be of good moral character.
  • Solid driver record with no convictions for Driving Under the Influence within the past 10 years. Convictions for Driving Under Suspension within the past 5 years will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Police Officer Selection Process:

  • Physical Agility Test as mandated by the SC Criminal Justice Academy
  • Police Officer Selection Test (POST), which includes a reading , writing, and comprehension test
  • Initial interview conducted by senior patrolmen and supervisors within the department
  • Polygraph Examination
  • Final interview conducted by the Command Staff of the police department
  • Medical examination, drug screen, and psychological examination

Uncertified applicants will be required to complete the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy’s Basic Law Enforcement program, which will include eight weeks at our academy in Columbia, SC. The police department pays your salary while you are at the Academy and provides all equipment and transportation.

Current in-state certified applicants must possess a valid LE 1 certification from the SC Criminal Justice Academy at the time of applying. We will also accept out-of-state transfers for those who possess a valid POST certification.

Out-of-state applicants will be required to obtain a South Carolina Driver’s License prior to the start of employment. Out-of-state POST certified individuals will be required to complete the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Special Basic Class 1 training within six months of employment.
