Amphitheater

  • Yes. All furry friends are allowed to attend most events. They are required to be on a leash.

  • No. All tables and chairs are the responsibility of the renter to bring to, and remove from, the venue.

  • Yes. In fact for certain events it is required. In addition to regular Police patrol; special event security can be contracted by contacting Lt. Brooks.

  • In order to assure your event goes as smoothly as possible The City of Hanahan requires at least one staff member be on site during the event. Certain events may require additional staff members based on the size of the event, the expected number attendees, and other factors.

  • For certain events the City provides permits to vendors to serve alcohol. Visitors are not allowed to bring their own. An application to serve alcohol is included in the Rental Application and must be approved by the Hanahan Police Department. Contact Lt. Brooks for additional information.

  • All events have to be concluded by 11:00 P.M.

  • Yes. The concessions facility, which includes a full kitchen (including fryers, grills, ovens, refrigerators, deep freezers, washing station, food preparation area and much more), can be rented. Additional fees apply for access to the concession facility.

Building & Codes

  • Yes, if you or your immediate family members are performing the work and if you will live in your home for at least two years after the work is completed. The Owner/Disclosure Form must be completed.

  • Yes, if the homeowner is qualified to do the work and resides in the home. However, each project must be approved by the Building and Codes department. Depending upon the type of work, the owner may be required by state Law to live in the home for two years after completion of the work. The Owner/Disclosure Form must be completed.

  • Yes.  As long as the requirements of the SC State Law for owner/builders are met.

  • Yes, a zoning review is required to ensure the proposed fence will be compliant with the zoning ordinance (here). A Building permit will be required.

  • Yes, a Building Permit is required for the accessory structures to ensure the structure will be compliant with the building code and the zoning ordinance.

  • Yes, a permit is required for 8″ and greater in diameter trees as dictated in the zoning ordinance (here).  Tree removal permits are free (here).

  • As a homeowner, you can obtain a building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permit. City Ordinance however prohibits a homeowner from obtaining a gas permit and performing the work. A licensed contractor has to obtain this permit.

EMS

  • Taxes pay for the staffing, vehicles and stations required to provide Emergency Medical Services. User fees help offset the costs of specific equipment and supplies associated with each ambulance call. If you fail to pay your user fee, EMS may collect the fee from your state tax refund using a debt set off program.

Finance

  • Franchise fees are charges to utility companies for the privilege of operating within municipal boundaries. They are a routine and common practice for municipalities across the state and the country. Examples are electricity, telephone, cable television, waste management and natural gas.

    Franchise fees are implemented as part of a service agreement executed between a government and a utility company. These Service agreements outline the terms under which utility companies provide service to customers within a specific territory and local governments require them in order to ensure service to all customers in a geographic area.

  • Property Taxes for the City of Hanahan are billed and collected by the Berkeley County Auditors’ and Treasurer’s departments through intergovernmental agreements entered into by the City of Hanahan and Berkeley County. Floodplain

  • Turkey Creek and the Cooper River, which is tidally influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, have caused the most flood damage in Hanahan.

FOIA

  • You may contact the department who maintains the document(s) to schedule an appointment to view the copyrighted materials if you wish, but they cannot be reproduced or copied, in whole or apart, without written consent of the design professional.  During your appointment, you may not photograph or video the copyrighted materials and may be asked to leave your electronic device(s) at a desk or in your vehicle.  Written permission from the design professional, i.e. Engineer, Architect, etc., must specifically address the consent to City of Hanahan for release of the specified copyrighted document(s). 

  • The City is afforded 10 days (not including  weekends and legal public holidays) of the receipt of the request to notify the person making the request of its determination and the reasons for it; provided, however, that if the record is more than twenty-four 24 months old at the date the request is made, the public body has 20 days (not including weekends and legal public holidays), of the receipt to make this notification.  

    If the records are less than 24 months old, the City must make available the records within 30 calendar days.  If the records are more than 24 months old, wholly or apart, the City must make available the records within 35 calendar days.

Search Tips and Tricks

  • Yes.  The website indexes web pages as well as PDFs, Microsoft Office documents, and text documents.

  • No.  By default, the search results will show matches for any word within the phrase.  In this example, you would receive results for all web pages and documents that contained either the word alarm or the word permit or both.

    In order to search on an exact phrase, enclose your search phrase in quotations.  The search results for "alarm permit" will show matches for that exact phrase.

  • Yes.   You can exclude words by using the minus sign (-).   In order to find the results of all pages that have alarm in the result but not permit, you would search for alarm -permit.
