Building & Codes

  • Yes, if you or your immediate family members are performing the work and if you will live in your home for at least two years after the work is completed. The Owner/Disclosure Form must be completed.

  • Yes, if the homeowner is qualified to do the work and resides in the home. However, each project must be approved by the Building and Codes department. Depending upon the type of work, the owner may be required by state Law to live in the home for two years after completion of the work. The Owner/Disclosure Form must be completed.

  • Yes.  As long as the requirements of the SC State Law for owner/builders are met.

  • Yes, a zoning review is required to ensure the proposed fence will be compliant with the zoning ordinance (here). A Building permit will be required.

  • Yes, a Building Permit is required for the accessory structures to ensure the structure will be compliant with the building code and the zoning ordinance.

  • Yes, a permit is required for 8″ and greater in diameter trees as dictated in the zoning ordinance (here).  Tree removal permits are free (here).

  • As a homeowner, you can obtain a building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permit. City Ordinance however prohibits a homeowner from obtaining a gas permit and performing the work. A licensed contractor has to obtain this permit.
