Summer Camp Counselor

Function

Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Program Director, the Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for supervision of summer camp participants and the planning and organizing of activities through the development of lesson plans.  Summer Camp counselor is also responsible for the cleanliness of the facility and maintaining daily sign-in and sign-out sheets.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop, plan and coordinate engaging recreational activities for participants.
  • Maintain accurate record of camp activities and data such as attendance logs, incident reports and check-in and check-out sheets.
  • Supervise activities of children, including but not limited to music, games, art, swimming, and outside activities.
  • Monitor and supervise campers to identify and respond to unruly behavior or deviations from camp guidelines.
  • Implement policies for the safety of campers, equipment, and personal property.
  • Act as a role model for campers in activities which require cleanliness, punctuality, and sportsmanship.
  • Set a good example for campers regarding promptness, manners, language, appearance, and health.
  • Provide an enjoyable experience for all campers.
  • Participate in the general planning of the camp program.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure camp environment is clean and free of hazards.
  • Notify Program Director of hazards, damaged equipment, or other needed repairs.
  • Render first aid and complete accident and incident reports when necessary.
  • Always keep safety of campers in mind. Campers are NEVER to be left unattended.
  • Always know whereabouts of the group, including early morning arrivals, bus, camp, trips, etc.
  • Keep all equipment in good operating condition and be responsible for returning items to their proper place.
  • Maintain positive relations with parents, campers, and other staff.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of methods and techniques for organizing programs and activities for children.

Knowledge of arts, crafts, and wide variety of recreational activities.

Knowledge of the rules relating to games and sports.

Ability and skill to organize children.

Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and direct the activities of the Summer Camp Program.

Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with fellow staff and the general public.

Ability to follow oral and written communications, assist willingly as needed.

Knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety procedures. 

Ability to manage multiple tasks in a detailed and accurate manner.

Ability to lead by example and demonstrate the highest level of ethics.

Ability to use logic and reasoning to understand, analyze, and evaluate situations and exercise good judgment to make appropriate decisions.

Excellent ability to listen and understand information and ideas presented verbally and in writing.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Predominately works under typical classroom and playground conditions with noise levels usually moderate to loud.
  • Exposure to the elements may occur in performing duties associated with the athletic fields, playground, and beach area.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person with campers and with various communication devices, such as microphone and walkie talkies.
  • This position requires a lot of bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching and active involvement with camp activities and games.
  • Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 50 pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

 

Requirements for the position:

Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver’s License; High School diploma or one to two years’ experience in working with and supervising children or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Must be physically able to lift, carry, push, and pull materials or objects up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work at least 35 hours per week. We will consider rising High School seniors that have experience in working or supervising children.

Starting pay for camp counselor is $13.00 per hour
